Planning a trip down south or up north on the N9 during the December holidays?
Why not turn off to Nieu Bethesda (between Graaff Reinet and Middelburg) for Quilts in a Church!

Nestled below the Compassberg, Nieu Bethesda is an oasis in the arid Karoo.  Well known for the Owl House, this village also boasts a few art galleries, restaurants, fossils expeditions and donkey cart rides! 
Also in town, is a beautiful Dutch Reformed Church building, with the congregation who celebrated its 140th birthday in 2018.

The Dutch Reformed Church Nieu Bethesda still have services on Sunday mornings and every year the original acetylene gas lamps is used for their Christmas Carols. For the first time in its history, the building  hosted a quilt exhibition in December 2019!

Quilts in a Church 2021:
Dates:  Wednesday, 15  to Saturday, 18 December 2021
Times:  9:00 – 16:00 daily

Quilts and wallhangings from quilters in the Eastern Cape will be on display throughout the church building, as well as the SAQG Teachers’ Forum Hands Up Collection and “A Journey of an Artist” Fibre Art Exhibition.

Home to a growing number of artists, crafters and other creatives, it’s also home to Helen Martins’ Owl House and Camel Yard.
A host of other activities make Nieu Bethesda a preferred destination to unwind

The Nieu Bethesda Pumpalooza is an annual celebration of everything and anything to do with pumpkins, hosted on Easter Saturday.
Since 2019 this occasion is also celebrated with a Fibre Art Exhibition..
 Fibre/art quilt artists from around SA are invited to enter pieces to be displayed and for sale for the duration of the Easter weekend.

Since 2020 Quilt Karoo is hosted in Nieu Bethesda, offering quilt workshops to spark your creativity.
Classes are offered by SAQG accredited quilt teachers in a variety of techniques for all skill levels!
